Ultrasound scanning
Ultrasound scanning uses high frequency sound waves to form an image of whatever part of the body is being scanned. It is a quick out-patient scan that is the first line of investigation for many conditions particularly in the abdomen. It is a very safe method of imaging that does not involve any radiation exposure, hence its use in pregnancy. When attending for an abdominal scan you may be asked to fast for a few hours or to fill your bladder depending on the purpose of the scan. You will of course receive full instructions beforehand.
CT scanning
CT (Computed Tomography) scanning is a quick method of scanning that involves lying on a table which moves through a circular gantry with a rotating x-ray beam.
MRI scanning
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a scanning technique that uses a high powered magnetic field and radio frequency waves to produce exquisitely detailed images. It is a safe method of scanning which does not involve exposure to x-rays.
